David McGee's Webpage

This is a Free-Range, Organic, non-GMO, Human-Made Site

I am deeply bored and I simply can't sleep. So now this site will now have an no-AI statement.

Every word on the domain was personally written by me, with my hominin appendages.1 I might occasionally throw a draft into The Machine and have it check if I made flagrant grammatical errors. But that will constitute the maximal extent of its involvement.

I am not a strongly anti-AI person. I think there are a few things it's quite useful for.2 But I think it's rude to put LLM-generated text on the internet and claim it's your own (not to mention dishonest). Reading involves an implicit social contract: you took the time to write out your thoughts, and I take the time to read them. But, if you had Claude or ChatGPT do your thinking for you, you didn't put in an ounce of effort, but you're still demanding I give a damn what you have to say.

Furthermore, I basically run this site as a hobby. Hobbies are meant to be fun, and there's something very sad about making a robot have fun for you. Should robots eat your birthday cake for you? Do we need robots to go on walks in the park for us? Should we make ChatGPT go out and have sex for you? I just don't think that's a good idea.

  1. Unless I'm quoting somebody. I feel like that's implied.

  2. It can be quite a good tutor, and it's very nice as a highly exalted search engine. I know people with bad dysgraphia who use it as an accessibility tool, and that seems good.
