Probably Leaving Bearblog
I've quite liked hosting my site on Bear, I think it's a great platform. But I think I'll probably leave it for three reasons, all more to do with me than Herman.
On the one hand, I feel vaguely like writing my own static site. An internet acquaintance has a very nice-looking static site, and it occurred to me that this is the sort of thing I could build. Michaelmas tests lately over, I have enough time to do so.
Currently, the site also just has a lot of tonal whiplash. We have dumb jokes, we have a couple worldbuilding projects, and we have a blog. But the blog is a combination of: (a) a brewlog, (b) shower thoughts from 1:30 AM, and © the the occasional long and actually good essay. I could plausibly put the brewlog on a static site, or I could just keep it to myself, and that seems like a more natural place for my fiction than a blogging platform.
In 2026, the natural place for © is a Substack. I mildly dislike Substack as a piece of technology, but that is where people write the sort of blogs I find myself wanting to. Recently, I've found myself writing several things which are blunter, longer, more controversial, and more hopelessly pedantic than seems normal on Bear, and you should really only publish things like that in venues where it's socially acceptable. It is on certain corners of Substack, I'm not sure it is here.
Also, I am not as anonymous as I'd like on here. Aside from a few times I have posted cringe on main, before deleting it, I don't share many personal details here. But the person this site describes is fairly recognizable. I doubt employers or grad programs would see through my pseudonym, but friends and family might, and they don't all need to.
I'll take everything down as soon as I feel like it. Many of you will not taste death before this blog passes away.
