I've Seen it Raining Fire in the Sky

I recently flew to my parents' for Christmas. It was the first time I'd flown in a long time, probably the third or forth time I have as an adult.

I loved it. I love feeling the G - forces as the plane lifts off and getting to watch the world below. You see cars getting as small as ants, and in a few minutes you'll be above the clouds.

My connecting flight was supposed to leave in the mid - afternoon, but it got delayed for hours, so I ended up leaving at dusk.

This frustrated me at first. But then the sun set and we rose above the clouds. I happened to look up from my phone and out the window, and there was a flash of light. For an instant, I saw great spires and buttresses of cloud, illuminated as by a fire. And then, just as suddenly, it was dark again. I slowly realized that I was seeing lightning strike many miles away.

It went on for a long time, and I couldn't take my eyes off it. It was incredibly beautiful--almost entrancing. I had a sudden sense of how small I was and how big the clouds were, and of how high I must have been above the ground. Some people might be inclined to call it a religious experience, though I would not.
